Buying Guide

We don’t want a stiff neck in the morning and we don't want any unintended health consequences. Sleeping would seem to be a generally safe and healthful activity, but that isn't necessarily the case, given the hazardous chemicals included in many pillows.

So that’s why we believe it’s important to have a pillow made from sustainable products, produced using a fair distribution network, and connected with a green economy.

Avoid concerns about VOCs, protective coatings, antibacterial treatment, and stain-resistant additives and coatings off-gassing! Choose environmentally responsible options.

Here is a list of certifications you can reference when making your buying decisions:

  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) is a set of standards for natural rubber sourced from organically certified plants (United States Department of Agriculture National Organic Program or EU). A product must include at least 95% organic raw material that has been certified.
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the main textile manufacturing benchmark for sustainable fiber accreditation for wool, kapok, and cotton globally. It forbids the use of cancer-causing and birth-defect-causing substances that are widely used in textile manufacturing.
  • OEKO-TEX states: “If a textile piece has the STANDARD 100 designation, you can be confident that every component of this article, i.e., every thread, button, and other accessories, has been tested for hazardous chemicals and that the piece is however innocuous in enormous environmental terms.”
  • The Responsible Down Guideline (RDS) is an optional world standard that prohibits the extraction of live animal fur, coercing, and other practices.
  • Wool, cotton fabrics, hemp, and natural (rather than synthetic) rubber/latex are the best options. Keep an eye out for eco-labels.

Conclusion

Companies that produce environmentally friendly pillows need to ensure that their production methods are likewise environmentally beneficial.

They use less water, employ eco-friendly colors or fabric procedures, reuse resources, and strive for a closed-loop manufacturing process. By doing so, companies like the ones listed above are able to reduce their environmental effect while also producing high-quality items.
